The Story Behind This Riddle

This is one of the oldest recorded riddles in history, found in the Book of Judges in the Old Testament (Judges 14). The story goes like this: Samson, the legendary strongman of ancient Israel, killed a young lion with his bare hands on a journey. When he passed the same spot later, he found that bees had built a hive inside the lion’s body and filled it with honey. He scooped out the honey and ate it, but kept the whole thing a secret.

At his wedding feast, he turned the experience into a riddle and bet thirty guests they couldn’t solve it within seven days. They couldn’t, because the answer was based on something only Samson had seen. The guests eventually got the answer by pressuring Samson’s wife, and the whole thing ended badly for everyone involved. It’s often called one of the most unfair riddles ever posed, but it has survived for over 3,000 years for a reason. A good riddle doesn’t have to be fair. It just has to be unforgettable.
